The European battlefields lay far from the Parsonage dining room, but the Brontës were captivated by the Napoleonic conflicts. They read military accounts in newspapers and periodicals and this exposure to war and bloodshed greatly influenced their creativity.
From the miniature books of their childhood to the adult novels, violence and brutality permeate the Brontës’ work. In acknowledgement of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, this exhibition explores the family’s fascination with war.
