The Lost Child

We are delighted to welcome Caryl Phillips to the Brontë Lounge.

Caryl Phillips’ 2015 novel The Lost Child is a bold reimagining of Wuthering Heights.  Set in 1960s Leeds, the book explores migration, social exclusion and family and conjures a young Heathcliff before he is taken in by Mr Earnshaw.   In 2018, Caryl contributed to Making Thunder Roar, the Brontë Parsonage Museum’s special exhibition marking the bicentenary of Emily Brontë, which invited writers and artists to create a personal response to the most enigmatic Brontë sister.

In this zoom event, Caryl will read from The Lost Child and talk to host Helen Meller about its themes, the Brontës, Jean Rhys and life growing up in the north of England.

Caryl Phillips is the author of numerous books of non-fiction and fiction. Dancing in the Dark won the 2006 PEN Open Book Award, and A Distant Shore won the 2004 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize.  His 2018 work, A View of the Empire at Sunset, is a biographical novel of the life of Jean Rhys, the author of Wide Sargasso Sea, which she wrote as a prequel to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.

Caryl is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and is currently Professor of English at Yale University.  He will join us live from Connecticut for this event.

Tickets cost £5 and the event will start at 7.30pm UK time (GMT)
This event will take place via zoom.  It is a live event and will not be recorded.

The Brontë Society is a registered charity and this event has been organised to raise funds for the Brontë Parsonage Museum at this challenging time.

Full details of how to join the event will be sent once you have booked your place.

Please note that many museum staff are still furloughed or working from home, so at times, there may not be anyone one in the office to take your call. Please email bookings@bronte.org.uk if you have any queries about this event.

Thank you for your support.  We look forward to welcoming you to the Brontë Lounge soon!
