Colour-in version of her sewing exercise
When Emily finished sewing her sampler she was just nine years old. Samplers were used as a way of teaching girls (and it was only girls) to embroider: a skill deemed essential in the nineteenth century. This would have taken her many hours and probably some tears of frustration. The original (below) was in brown thread on a white background, but we've reversed it so that it's more fun to colour.
