Forces that shaped the writing lives of the famous sisters
Background to the Brontës (AS/A2)
An informal, lively talk which looks at the historical and social context of the Brontës' novels as well as the lives of the Brontës themselves. How did their early lives shape their later work, and who were the writers who influenced them? How far did wider world events such as colonialism impact on their work, and what were the particular problems for a woman wanting to get published? The talk uses Powerpoint images, and there is plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.
(This talk focuses particularly on either Emily Brontë or Charlotte Brontë, depending on text studied.)
