Four writers revisit the Brontës’ imaginary world of Angria in this new exhibition of stories and illustrations.

Before there were Wuthering Heights and Thornfield Hall, there was the Brontë siblings’ series of imaginary worlds. Among them was Angria, a fantastical kingdom that maps directly onto the coast of West Africa.

Now, nearly 200 years on, we’ve teamed up with Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture to invite four emerging writers to create new stories inspired by Angria yet rooted in the writers’ own imaginations. This project and its stories will act as the foundations of a new literary relationship between Bradford and Ghana.

The four writers – Claire Govender and Kristina Diprose, both from Bradford, and Akorfa Dawson and Peggy Kere Osman, both from Ghana – are writing their stories following residencies at the Brontë Parsonage Museum and Pa Gya! A Literary Festival in Accra.

In this exhibition the stories will be presented as audio recordings alongside illustrations inspired by the writers’ works. As part of our Brontë Women’s Writing Festival (26-28 September), we’ll be joined by our four writers to delve into their stories and explore their experiences.
