Eleanor Houghton, Charlotte Brontë’s Black Lace, Pen and ink, 2021
Charlotte Brontë would have worn this pretty fan-shaped veil with a bonnet or draped over her shoulders. It added a notable femininity to an evening ensemble but was also a popular addition to mourning dress as it offered privacy to the wearer. This drawing took over eighteen hours and seven fine-tipped, black pens to produce.
