This bag was worked by Charlotte Brontë and given as a gift to Elizabeth Wheelwright, mother of Laetitia, Emily, Frances, Sarah Ann, and Julia. Charlotte and Emily first met the family at the Pensionnat Heger in Brussels where the girls were all day boarders. Brontë was a proficient needlewoman and as well as making many of her own clothes, often produced hand sewn presents for others.
