1893 to present day
The Brontë Society was founded in 1893 to promote interest in the Brontë family and their works. Its aim was to set up a permanent home for items belonging to the Brontës and the first museum opened in 1895 above the Yorkshire Penny Bank on Haworth Main Street.
Haworth Parsonage (where the Brontës grew up) was bought by Sir James Roberts and gifted to the Brontë Society in 1928, when it opened as the Brontë Parsonage Museum. The Brontë Society, which is a membership organisation, continues to be responsible for the Museum and its collections today.
The Brontë Society is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. It’s governed by the Brontë Society Board of Trustees, with the day-to-day running of the Brontë Parsonage Museum delegated to the Director.
The Brontë Society is supported by Arts Council England and the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.
